1st announcements of the year: Quarter 1 Calendar, Reminders for earthquakes, raining day, laptops, exiting campus, and gang prevention policies. You represent Fillmore, Piru, and Sierra! Make us all, including yourself, proud!

Good morning, Warriors! Today is Monday, August 21st, 2023, and here are our announcements.

There are just 33 days of school left until the quarter ends. Here's the calendar so you know what's coming up:

- Today, Monday the 21st, we will have the Army here at lunch.
- On Wednesday, you'll see that we have progress reports sent home every two weeks.
- We have a three-day weekend for Labor Day, so there is no school on Monday the 4th.
- There's an assembly on Thursday the 7th.
- On Friday the 6th, there is a final sweet carrots Sierra, followed by the last day of the quarter. This is also when we have awards for the quarter. Families are invited to see their students receive awards. We do give them out during the school day. You'll receive certificates and an opportunity to select something from the prize table.

One thing that's on this calendar: this Saturday is Adult School open house. So if you know anybody that is 18 or older and is interested in working on their high school diploma, citizenship, English as a second language, auto classes, or computers, please make sure they know about the Saturday event. Flyers will be going home.

We hope you all had a safe weekend. A reminder: if an earthquake occurs while you're at school or anywhere, cover and wait for an all-clear. Sometimes earthquakes take longer than others, and then you need to listen for directions. If it's quick and of a certain size, we will evacuate the building. If it's not of a certain size and everything seems fine, we will stay close in our classrooms but be ready for any aftershocks.

Today's schedule: If the tables and chairs are moved outside, we will eat outside. If not, we'll eat in the classroom. Later this week, on Wednesday, we have the Army recruiters joining us at lunch. People are welcome to go up to the table and ask questions to get information.

Some reminders: Please bring your device every day. Starting now, we will use them in almost all classes, every single day. When you leave campus, always use the sidewalks and crosswalks to exit. We do this to avoid the parking lot because Summer High School drivers are not the same. Many times, they are scrambling to get back to campus in time for the end of their lunch and are not watching where they're going. So, unless your own vehicle is parked in the parking lot, you should be using sidewalks or crosswalks to walk home or to meet your ride out on the street.

Also, a reminder: Sierra students may not go onto the Fillmore High School side of the street or engage with any Fillmore High School students without an adult. We do not want you to be accused of doing something by their campus security. It's been an issue in the past, and we're doing it to protect you. So, make sure you always stay on our side of the campus. If you need to go over to that campus, check with us. We'll figure out a system so you can do that. Usually, it has to be with supervision, at least somewhere close to you on the same side of the street. We're monitoring what's going on. We do this for everybody.

Regarding I-Ready, it's coming. We use it to measure your progress and to decide on interventions. No one should score below an eighth-grade level. If you do, we'll have a conversation to figure out how to support you. We'll be passing by your previous scores so you can see what you need to do to improve.

FYI, there is Gang Prevention Education Code and School Board policy that we must follow. If you do things that might be related to tagging, dress like a gang member, or flash gang signs, we do have to document it and share it with a school resource officer. Please be mindful of this at all times.

Sierra High School students are breaking the stigmas and proving themselves to be great. This is how we break the stigmas while you're here at Sierra. This is the time to show your loved ones who have been cheering you on and trying to support you that you are ready to be an adult through your hard work and good choices. Graduating high school is your way of proving that. Stay on track with everything you do.

This is also the time to show the negative people or negative thoughts in your life that they are not accurate. Rise above those expectations. Show your best self and prove them wrong. When the community of Sylmar thinks of Sierra, we want them to be proud and recognize your qualities, not the stigmas. You represent Sierra now and in the future. Your choices today have an impact on how people perceive Sierra in the future. You want them to see Sierra as a great place and recognize that you attended a school that prepared you for a job, that you're a great human being, and that you're ready to accomplish great things.
