good evening new family welcome to Sierra High School your child here at Sarah is now called a warrior and we are happy to have them intentionally hope everybody safe and dry and avoiding these dangerous road conditions usually in person we do this acknowledgment and it is very meaningful and I want to do it to your even though it is online as a beginner event we acknowledge the original and have a this area the Chumash this land was once the home to the Chumash tribe they were the original stewards of the land past and present we honor with gratitude the land itself and the Chumash tribe she has called themselves the first people and they which of the Pacific Ocean is our first home we about to continue to respect what their ancestors protected this acknowledgment only becomes meaningful when combined with relationships and informed action this is just the first step in honoring the land we are on and they're people we also wanted knowledge that your ancestors you your ancestors students and your family members who have led you here to this place and time of being a student at Sierra High School well you and your family are well you are a family and a student at Sierra we about to continue the work of caring for and guiding your pride and joy your gift your child when you place your child into our care here at Sierra we recognize your commitment to their success and we join you the number of yards in cultivating their future normally I would toss this to our counselor but I'm going to go ahead and summarize this this is our beautiful and amazing counselor Miss Jackie she's looking forward to working with each of our families she can be calls here is her number on our screen you can always come back to this or you can look on our website as well as her email address I want you to know she's a dog his name is Portrait of him in her office and you'll hear her talking about him it is her third year as a school counselor and she absolutely loves it very very talented she wants to know that she's a proud product of migration and was the second of her family to go to college in the first girl in the entire family of sift she loves music food and traveling she became a school counselor after losing her uncle to suicide and then struggling with her own mental health for years she is open and honest about her mental health struggles and her ongoing sessions with her therapist because she believes it reducing the stigma of mental health and talks about it so that others can feel comfortable as well she is very excited to get to know all of you this is Henry this is my second year here at Sierra before this I was in a system but the middle school so I know some of your students started I have three sons ages 14 20 and 24 and I can relate to the struggles of raising kids these days mean it's not easy and we are in together and I am here to help you I want to see Mom and I'm very proud to say that it did not stop me from becoming who I am today it made me work harder and stronger for my dreams I hope to inspire our students to the same no matter what they're facing a group until March until I went to middle school my family is very big and there's a chance I'm related to someone that goes to our school that has happened since I last two years I'm in and then inevitably a cousin of a cousin so if you are a dad yellow or there is goodness you're probably related and I absolutely love it the most important value I bring to the school and to our students is compassion your child will be loved and encouraged and guided to grow into a young adult while here at Sierra our mission here is to provide a quality education Foster a sense of community where your student where they get personal recognition academic success and they can positively identify themselves in a structured yet very flexible environment my beautiful. Your student will have for teachers that they will get to know me I will have one counselor we have an instructional assistant custodian you'll be greeted by our help in a tenant's apartment Montano our office manager Sierra we have our own ASP we have quarterly Awards so parents be on the lookout for the end of the quarter for an invitation every student who gets an award parents get an invitation to join us to celebrate their child about her students here serve 16 and older students who choose to be worries for any of the following reasons they might be quiet assistant which happened a lot accelerated graduate early they need a different schedule in the high school so that they can finish early usually is because they have to get for or the desire a small rate Brilliant Minds who are all wonderful and we are very excited to get to know them we have some very important expectations we want to make sure your child knows on their first day of school so try to go through each of our expectations and what happens if these expectations are not met everyone watch your language we are in a professional setting we have parents and young children off and on our campus Because we also have independent studies program so while you're on our campus you're representing Sierra as well as the communities in Fillmore respectful kind and mature in your language in action always come prepared here are practicing your skills for their Workforce quality employees bring what they needed today so parents we expect you I want to come and go from school every day with a charge laptop pencils paper and assignment so please make sure they are taking a backpack with them every day that they have their laptop with it is extremely critical they get docked points if they don't have the items that they need you might be getting a phone call saying hey your child absolutely must have their laptop please bring it right now student this is an opportunity for you to practice your maturity and responsibility as well as Savior sometime so you don't fall behind in class here at Sierra we take back very seriously everyone deserves to be treated with kindness jokes at the expense of others based on gender sexual preference I'm just with your friends represents your beliefs and your family's beliefs so please represent those things with kindness and positivity parents are leaving house that you all remove your hoods and beanies mom and classrooms we want to make sure your ears are clear of having a sound of bison you can hear your teacher along with this every student is given a Sierra hat at the beginning of the quarter those hats are the only hat allowed here on our campus all other headwear must be removed in while they come to campus the only loud is a Steeler hat beanies can be a warrior must be plain we do this because it follows our board policy on gang prevention as well as keeping our students when you are at Sierra you are a warrior the outside Association to various groups are get left behind at the beat of our school so please be here you are just a worry when you're here stay strong enough it is important to be here on time and here every single day are new start time is Sears 8:25 everyday 8:30 is late and that includes Thursday Sylmar high school has a late start Thursday we do not hear at Sierra be on time is a vital skill for an adult our students must learn to be able to manage your time well send it there on time on time means you are not losing out on information or instruction and you get bonus point every time you're in class on time appropriate voice levels when your teacher is instructing you need to be silent so that everybody can your teachers will give you instructions on what Sierra or campus is beautiful and we like to keep it that way you're gum is absolutely not allowed if you need something to freshen up your breath we keep missing prices for you but all right this is a big win for new students silence and turn in your cell phone at the start of every class your learning time is critical you only at school 125cc will not have much if any homework if you stay focused during class and get it done your brain needs and must learn how to disconnect from the constant interruptions of your phone while you are here so as you are in the class there's a location in your classroom to plug in your phone if you need to charge it with a charger your phone stay on the counters parents if your child is texting you during the school day that means they are using their phone when they are not supposed to be all right so your child is not responding to your text messages it's because they're not allowed to have their phones now their teacher sometimes let students use your phone if it's appropriate if the teachers not giving instructions if it is silent working time of the kids are just going to listen to music while they're riding for example so there will be times your child will get to check their phone and know that they are expecting a different location we have three levels were the first one is a student and teacher conference the second level second timer behavior is not met the event happens if third time we bring her whole team all the students teachers the counselor the principle of the guardian and the student we have a conference about the student's Behavior we do that because it is certain does not turn in their phone are using it without permission the first time the phone will be sent to the office and the student can pick it up for their level the second time is parent must be the one to pick it up from the office and we will have our conference and the student will not be allowed to have a we will make some arrangements with parents about what that looks like he has similar fur hats hats will be confiscated and placed in the office if they are not the right cool hat we 100% so I don't expect a single student have a problem with if for some reason it will be the only one who can come and get the brisket just take off your hat bring it to school alright know what your goals are this year if your plan is to return to the high school you not have to take a class for a lower grade level for example a senior can't go back and take English 9 that's a friend if you want to graduate on timer you must have met the summer unified graduation qualified for this week parents we do daily announcements every day you can come and see her announcement or absent are expected to come and check their daily announcements so they know what's going on at school their brief 23 minutes and giving him updates parents we use parentsquare so we have a parent Square app you can download the parents were up and put it on any phone you just need to go to parentsquare.com and you can see the link their music almost daily for soon better outfit we use it so that you can text back the teachers teachers text to you it's your ability to get messages to and from the school as fast as possible please make sure you get the how you also might be getting texts all it looks like it's just text so please check to make sure you can get our message if you want to check your child's progress on our website we have the ability to check grades it is your cucumber your students will know they don't already will know how to check their own grades cuz we have them check weekly so they can always show you from their own computer or every parent or Guardian can check parents the next from their own account it's what you use earlier this year to enroll online and if you need how to use that we can show you lastly everyone needs help at some point if you ever need counseling support every student and every member of their family can get support we a program called care solid is that care solid.
